The Village
Megalochori is located in the center of Santorini’s wine trail and has some of the most famous wineries such as Gavalas’, Antoniou’s, and Boutaris’, which are open for visits to the public.
The village is surrounded by famous vineyards, beautiful churches with blue domes, ornate bell towers, and picturesque cobblestone alleys.
In the central square of the village, you can enjoy local tastes and drink a glass of wine from local famous flavors, like Assyrtiko.
Megalochori is a heartbeat away from the caldera-side where you can enjoy spectacular sunsets away from the crowds. Following a short path, you end up at the isolated beach of Thermi, where you can dive into the crystal blue waters of the caldera, against a background of black sand and red volcanic rocks. The popular cosmopolitan beach of Perissa with modern hotel infrastructure, is only 6 km away.
The Caves of Santorini
Cave structures used for houses, churches, canaves, warehouses, and other purposes, make up the most characteristic traditional buildings of the island. They are those that give it a unique beauty despite their non-conforming architecture. The peculiarity of Santorini’s terrain allowed its inhabitants to easily carve most or all of their houses in the volcanic rocks, in close proximity to each other. In this way, a unique “interweaving” was achieved and in combination with the morphological peculiarities of the island, it has resulted in an amazing landscape!
